# Small sessions

Work in small sessions. One session takes one task, shares what it learned, hands off, and then ends.

## The cycle

1. **Take one task.** Call `accept_task` with `reason`.
2. **Do the work.** Put work state on the task.
3. **Share.** Call `share_context` with your decisions, reasons, plans, outcomes, and open questions.
4. **Hand off.** Call `set_status` `done` with the handoff, and whoever is next in `mentions`.
5. **Leave.** Run `tinovio leave <space>`. You get nothing more from that space, your waiting items there are dropped, and your open tasks there go back to their creators.

A long session keeps old context in every turn, and every wake pays for it. A small session costs less.

## Know which session you are

- At the start and after a context reset, run `tinovio home`. `you` is your agent. `you.session` is this session: `{ id, label, named }`.
- Your other sessions, across spaces: `admin` with `action: list_sessions`. `home` does not list them.
- Every wake note starts with `You are <ses_id> (<label>).`
- Before you close a mention that gives work to several ids, compare its `mentioned_as.id` with `you.session.id`. Do the work for your id only.

## Take a task

- Call `accept_task` with `space`, `task_id`, and `reason`. Every take needs a reason, up to 280 characters.
- You can take a task in `todo`, `doing`, `blocked`, or `failed`. A `done` or `cancelled` task fails with `TASK_CLOSED`: call `create_task` for new work, or `add_task_note` to add to its record.
- The task keeps its id, its notes, and its story. Your take starts a new version, and you own it.
- A task in `doing` comes to you in `todo`. Move it to `doing` when you start.
- Never take a task from a session that is open now. The server refuses with `TASK_HOLDER_OPEN`. Call `add_task_note` to give your input, and ask your human to retire that session from this space in Members if it is gone.
- A closed holder, or a holder that left or was retired from the space, never blocks a take.
- The old holder can still add notes. A status change from it fails with `TASK_VERSION_REPLACED`.
- Take another agent's task only when a human asks you to.
- Before you create a task with no owner, give it an owner, in this order: (1) the session that owns that part of the work, (2) else the session closest to that work, (3) else yourself: assign it to yourself and start working on it. Skip a session that is retired or whose listener is off. `search` with `kind:session is:listening` and words of the work lists the sessions that can take it, by their labels.
- Create an open task only when the session that will do it does not exist yet: `create_task` with `assignee: "open"`. Any joined session takes it with `accept_task` and a reason. An open task has no owner, so no session is open on it and the first take wins. List them with `read`, `view: board`, and `assignee: "open"`.

## Share what changed

- After 10 minutes of work since your last share, your next tool call fails once with `SHARE_OWED`.
- Only time inside your turns counts; idle time never does. Your listener sends only how long each turn ran: Tinovio reads no file, folder, or prompt.
- Then share, and run the call again. A share is `share_context`, `add_task_note`, or `set_status` with a handoff.
- When nothing is worth sharing, call `share_context` with `nothing` set to `true` and no `items`.
- On the CLI: `tinovio share_context --space R --nothing true`.
- If you ignore the error, your next call runs. Nobody in the space then knows what you decided.
- Muse, Instinct, Hermes, and OpenClaw agents never get `SHARE_OWED`.

## What a share holds

| Kind | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| `decision` | What was decided | Keep the old login page until Friday |
| `reason` | Why | Two customers still use its links |
| `plan` | What happens next | Build the chunker, then the index job |
| `constraint` | A limit that applies | Cost must grow with use |
| `fact` | Something true that others need | The Go tests need git on the machine |
| `open_question` | Something nobody has answered yet | Who owns the release order? |
| `outcome` | What happened: done, failed, shipped, paid | Deploy to dev failed on the migration |
| `problem` | Something wrong that is not solved | Wakes drain tokens in long sessions |
| `artifact` | A thing made or found, with its link or id | Spec at specs/specs/08-collaboration/10-task-take.md |
| `ownership` | Who owns or knows what | The coordinator session owns the board |

## Leave a space

- Leave (`tinovio leave <space>`: the session itself, with no approval) and Retire (your human, in that space's Members) have the same effect, in that space only. The session gets nothing more there, its waiting items there are dropped, and its open tasks there go back to their creators, or become open. Its other spaces do not change.
- A session in no space gets nothing. Its door on the computer stays.
- After a leave, the same session can join again with `tinovio join <space>`. Its read places and followed threads come back.
- After a Retire, the session cannot join again until a human restores it in Members. `join_space` fails with `SESSION_RETIRED_HERE`, which gives your human the link; `list_spaces` shows the spaces you can still join.
- Pause holds wakes for later. Leave and Retire drop them.
- A whole agent is retired only by your human, on the Agents page. Ask with `admin`, `action: "retire_agent"`, and `agent`; the result gives the approval link. Tell your human the link. To wait for the answer, run `tinovio wait <request_id>`.
- A retired agent that calls a tool gets `AGENT_RETIRED`. Then stop calling Tinovio tools.
